Scotty Strongarm 30" Manual Downrigger — 30-inch Boom, Manual Downrigger
Product description
The Strongarm is the heavy-duty manual option in Scotty's lineup, designed to handle regular use on intermediate-size craft. The package includes the downrigger with an integrated rod holder, an extension crank handle, the #1023 tilt-up mount bracket that allows the unit to be locked upright for storage or transport, and 200 feet of 150-pound-test stainless steel downrigger cable.
The boom measures 30 inches in length and is constructed from 1-1/4-inch diameter stainless steel for corrosion resistance and stiffness. Line retrieval is driven by a positive-drive depth counter that is spray-protected to keep readouts clear in wet conditions. The spool pays out roughly two feet of cable per full turn and the clutch brake offers an industry-leading braking surface for smooth, confident control when hauling up heavy weights.
Installation provides flexibility for boat set-ups: the tilt-up mount lets you move the unit out of the way for docking or trailering, while the extension handle improves leverage when lifting long runs of cable. The strong materials and straightforward mechanical design make this downrigger suitable for trolling, deep-water bait presentation, and other serious on-the-water applications where durability matters.

Solid performance after a custom install
Works very well; the brake is smooth and cranking a 10-lb weight from 100 ft is manageable. I avoided wiring for electric units and prefer the manual setup. I did need to weld a custom aluminum backing plate to transfer load from the gunnel into the hull so the fasteners take shear instead of tension. I also adjusted the mount to correct the gunnel slope so the boom sits level. The arm lifts up easily, making access to clips and stacked lines simple.

Well constructed with a minor gripe
Solidly built and clearly well designed like other gear from the maker. I rated it four stars because the rod holder position is limited. I suggest pairing it with a pivot/tilt mounting plate to move it out of the way quickly when docking or towing.

Does the job on a 20' boat
I've used this brand for years and bought two of these for a new 20' boat. The 30" boom is a great fit and everything functions as expected.

Damaged package and missing parts
The second unit arrived in a previously opened box with missing parts and both the handle and rod holder broken. Returning is difficult due to size, so we're trying to make repairs instead.

Simple, sturdy, and thoughtfully engineered
These manual rigs are deceptively basic and very reliable. The minimal design makes them lightweight yet strong, and the 2:1 spool ratio is handy. My favorite feature is the boom’s ability to tilt up and bring the ball within reach. Compared to other manual downriggers I’ve tried, this one feels better executed.

Sturdy, straightforward, and affordable
This downrigger is built to handle serious fishing; gear needs to be tough when you fish deep. It performs all required tasks without a high cost. Remember to add a mount to complete the setup.
