Fire Starter Squares (64-Pack) — Waterproof Fire Starters for Grill, Camp & Home
Product description
Material and construction: Each starter square is made from paraffin wax blended with sawdust and formed under high pressure. No adhesive is added during manufacturing, so there’s no chemical glue smell—just compact, pressed fuel that’s safe to use around food.
Pack contents and portability: This product comes as a 64-piece pack of small, lightweight squares. Their compact size makes them easy to carry in a camping kit, store in a drawer by the fireplace, or keep near the grill without taking much room.
Performance and safety: Squares are designed to be water resistant so they still ignite after exposure to damp conditions. They light quickly with a match or lighter and produce a steady flame long enough to catch kindling and charcoal. Because they’re made from basic, food-safe ingredients, they won’t transfer unwanted flavours to food cooked over the startup flame.
Where to use them: These ignition squares work well for barbecues and charcoal grills, backyard fire pits, indoor fireplaces and chimneys, wood stoves, smokers and even pizza ovens. They’re suitable for camping, hunting outings and home use alike.
Burn time and usage: A single square typically sustains a flame for several minutes (commonly cited around 6–8 minutes), which is ordinarily sufficient to light small sticks, charcoal or starter bundles. For larger fires, combine multiple squares to extend the ignition period.
How they’re made: The pressing process compresses sawdust and paraffin into rigid blocks that resist crumbling while still breaking apart when needed. The lack of added glue reduces off-gassing and keeps them largely odourless when burning.
Usage instructions: Step 1 — Position: Place two to four squares where you want the fire to start (for fireplaces or bigger pits, use more—up to six). Step 2 — Arrange: Stack dry kindling or place charcoal over the squares, leaving gaps for airflow so the flame can grow. Step 3 — Ignite: Light a corner of a square with a match or lighter and allow the steady flame to transfer to the surrounding fuel.
Pros
- Water-resistant, lights in damp conditions
- Odour-free and safe for cooking applications
- Compact and easy to carry
Cons
- Individual squares are small — may need several for large fires
- Not as hot or long-burning as larger starter blocks
- Can be tricky to use directly on some grill grates
VerdictThese pressed paraffin-and-sawdust squares are a reliable, compact option for getting fires going in a variety of settings. They’re water resistant, produce little to no smell, and usually need only one or two pieces to ignite kindling. While the small size makes them easy to tuck into a pack, heavier-duty users who want a longer, hotter single ignition may prefer larger blocks or more pieces at o

Camping staple — worked every time
We take these on summer trips and they performed perfectly on our last outing. Dependable ignition every time.

Among the best I’ve used
They light large oak logs without trouble, burn hotter and longer than other starters I’ve tried, and I usually need fewer pieces. Easy to break and reliable—I’ll keep buying them.

Ignites but sometimes not enough for big logs
They will light, but the flame sometimes dies before larger fireplace logs catch. I ended up using an extra starter product or several squares together. Might work better with more tinder first.

Too small for my needs
The pieces are very tiny — smaller than expected. They do burn for a while but are fiddly to light and handle. I’ll try a different size next time; not great value in my opinion.

Burns well and no resin smell
They work nicely. The squares are smaller than I expected but ignite easily and don’t have that strong resin odor that some starter sticks have. Much simpler to use.

Excellent product
Very effective for getting my fireplace started quickly.

Not ideal for some grill setups
They start fires fine but are so small they fell through my grill grate. I had to pile charcoal under them and add more on top. Using lots of them and even foil still barely got the coals going—took much longer than I hoped. I’ll finish the box but will try a different option next time.

Fast, dependable ignition — great for nightly fires (192 pack)
These starters make lighting my fireplace simple. Two or three pieces under kindling will get a fire going in minutes, even when the wood is slightly damp. The large 192-count supply has lasted through many evenings. They light quickly and burn steadily for several minutes, are essentially odourless and held up to some damp storage. Overall very impressed with the heat and convenience—just a couple of minor quibbles but highly useful.
